What is Photopoly?

Photopoly is an outdoor team-building activity that transforms the city into a bespoke board game.

Armed with instant cameras, printed maps, notebooks and game materials, the teams set off in search of buildings, local landmarks and urban details to recreate the scenes from the brief through photography.

The teams are given the same tasks, but each interprets them in its own way. This brings variety, humour and completely different visual outcomes, even though the participants are starting from the same set of challenges.

As well as the photos, the game puts your planning, spatial awareness, creativity and time management skills to the test.

A team that plans its strategy before setting off has a real advantage in the race for points and for the most memorable shots.

How does it work?

The experience begins with a briefing during which the teams are told the rules, the playing area, the scoring criteria and the aim of the activity.

Each group is given an instant camera, a map, a mission booklet and the materials needed for the route.

Before setting off, the participants work out their strategy: they choose the order of the locations, allocate roles, and decide who will spot the details, who will coordinate the route, who will set up the scene, and who will appear in the shot.

Time becomes a key resource, as the teams must complete as many missions as possible without compromising on the quality of the photographs.

Along the route, the teams look for the indicated landmarks and re-enact the scenes from the briefing.

The requirements are the same, but the concept, composition, humour and the way people engage with the project transform each photograph into a unique interpretation.

On returning, the photographs are displayed on the Photopoly board, assessed and converted into a score. The finale features a comparison of the interpretations, the rankings and a visual recap that captures the energy of the experience even after the event has ended.

Intended outcomes

When is Photopoly the right choice?

Photopoly is ideal for companies looking for an outdoor event full of energy, exploration and a memorable visual experience.

The city or destination of the event becomes part of the game, and participants have a clear reason to explore the place together, venturing beyond the usual routes.

It works well for mixed teams, because each person can contribute in a different way: through navigation, planning, organisation, creativity, attention to detail or being in the frame.

You don’t need any experience in photography – just ideas, a willingness to collaborate and a willingness to get involved.

It blends in naturally with:

  • off-site events and retreats in cities or destinations worth exploring
  • company days with a focus on outdoor activities
  • kick-off sessions focusing on energy, collaboration and creativity
  • activities for mixed or cross-departmental teams
  • conferences featuring an outdoor activity between working sessions
  • events where a memorable visual recap is desired

Why does it deliver results?

Photopoly works because it gives teams creative freedom within a framework of clear rules and objectives.

Participants may have very different ideas, but they must decide together on the route, the roles, the priorities and how each mission is to be carried out.

The format engages people through a variety of contributions. Some spot details, others optimise the route, organise the schedule, set up the scene, keep the team’s spirits high or provide creative direction. The result is immediately evident in the photographs taken along the route.

A key benefit is the final output. The instant photographs and the Photopoly display turn the experience into a visual summary that can be used for judging, debriefing, internal presentations or post-event communication.

The team doesn’t just leave with memories of an activity, but with tangible evidence of how they worked together and created something as a team.

That is why Photopoly is more than just a photo treasure hunt. It is an experience centred on exploration, creativity and teamwork, presented in an accessible, visual format that makes it easy to connect with the energy of the place.

FAQ

No. The camera is a tool for the game, and the score depends on how the team interprets the brief, develops their idea and works together throughout the challenge.
The distance depends on the town, location and time available. The route is finalised before the event, so that the pace and level of exertion are suitable for the group.
The landmarks, route and photo challenges are chosen based on the city and its surroundings, so that the destination becomes a real part of the experience.
As this is an outdoor activity, the route and conditions are checked in advance. Depending on the weather forecast and the location, the Universum team confirms the appropriate adjustments for the event well in advance.
The scoring takes into account the missions completed, compliance with the requirements, the creativity of the interpretation and the quality of the photographs. The scores are collated once the teams have returned to base.
What remains are the instant photos and the team’s final display board – a visual output suitable for a recap, an internal presentation or a debriefing discussion.
Yes. Exploring the site is part of the experience, and the route is designed so that participants can discover key points of interest in an active and memorable way.
