What is Funk the Junk?

Funk the Junk is a team-building music workshop in which seemingly ordinary objects are transformed into unconventional instruments, and participants work together to create an orchestra brimming with rhythm, energy and humour.

The activity begins with recycled materials and unexpected sounds, which the teams explore, combine and transform into a joint composition.

No musical experience is required; participants simply need to be attentive, curious and willing to get into the rhythm of the group.

The result is a performance created by the participants themselves, in which every sound counts and individual contributions come together to form a memorable collective experience.

How does it work?

The session begins with a demonstration led by the facilitators, who introduce the instruments, their sounds and what they can be used for. The group gradually gets into the spirit of things and learns simple concepts relating to rhythm, listening and coordination.

Participants try out the instruments, explore sound textures and create short sequences. The facilitators use clear signals to indicate when to start, stop, change the intensity and transition between different families of sounds.

As the team gains confidence, the experience evolves from reproducing simple rhythms to improvisation, composition and moments of conducting.

Participants can put forward ideas, build on their colleaguesโ€™ contributions and take turns conducting a sequence.

As a grand finale, the best moments are brought together in a shared musical arrangement

The orchestra of recycled objects comes together to play as a single ensemble, and the energy they generate is channelled into a synchronised, entertaining and memorable performance.

Intended outcomes

When is Funk the Junk the right choice?

Funk the Junk is ideal for companies looking for a creative, energetic activity thatโ€™s a bit different from a traditional music workshop.

It works very well when the group needs to bond quickly, relax and work towards a shared goal without the pressure of individual performance.

The theme of recycled instruments adds a relevant dimension to events focusing on innovation, adaptability, sustainability or the intelligent use of resources.

The message remains practical and easy to grasp: you can build something of value even from simple resources, when people listen, experiment and work together.

It blends in naturally with:

  • creative team-building activities involving active participation
  • off-site events or retreats focused on building connections
  • kick-offs that need energy and rhythm
  • activities on innovation, adaptability or sustainability
  • company days or indoor corporate events
  • engagement activities for mixed teams

Why does it deliver results?

Funk the Junk works because it makes collaboration immediately visible and audible.

When someone jumps in too early, loses their rhythm or fails to follow the cue, the whole group notices the difference. When people listen to one another, support one another and remain attentive to shared cues, the result gains momentum.

Unusual instruments reduce the fear of making mistakes and spark curiosity.

Participants do not need to demonstrate that they know anything about music, but rather to experiment, observe, react and build on their peersโ€™ ideas. It is precisely this freedom that makes the activity inclusive and suitable for diverse groups.

At the same time, the theme of transformed resources provides a powerful metaphor for organisations: value does not always come from perfect tools, but from the way in which people make creative use of what they have at their disposal.

That is why Funk the Junk can very naturally promote themes such as innovation, adaptability, collaboration and creative thinking.

Funk the Junk is a concept with a tried-and-tested format that can be adapted to the venue, the audience profile and the eventโ€™s message.
