What is Essence of Excellence?

Essence of Excellence is a creative team-building activity in which teams create a bespoke fragrance and a brand direction for a specific client or colleague profile.

Participants explore aromas, emotions, preferences and image associations, then transform these insights into a coherent concept: a fragrance, an identity and a brand story. It is not just a sensory workshop, but an experience centred on empathy, perception and the way in which creative decisions can respond to a clearly defined target audience.

The format combines creativity with a business mindset: teams must understand the client, choose the right ingredients, communicate internally and create a product that conveys the right emotion.

How does it work?

The activity begins with an introduction to the world of perfumes and how top, middle and base notes come together to create an olfactory experience. The teams create a client profile, setting out the characteristics, preferences and emotional themes they are to interpret.

Participants test ingredients, discuss their reactions to each fragrance and select the combinations that best reflect the brief they have been given. At the same time, the teams also develop a brand direction: a mood board, message, personality and positioning for the fragrance they have created.

The final stage involves testing and evaluation: the fragrances are presented, analysed and matched to customer profiles.

When is Essence of Excellence the right choice?

Essence of Excellence is ideal for companies seeking creative, elegant and relevant work in areas such as branding, communication, empathy and customer focus.

It’s an excellent choice when you want participants to step outside their rational mindset and explore how a target audience’s perceptions, emotions and preferences are formed.

It works very well for marketing, sales, HR and customer experience teams, or for mixed groups that need to quickly build a shared vision around a product, message or customer profile.

It blends in naturally with:

  • off-site events and retreats focusing on connection and creativity
  • kick-off meetings focusing on excellence, quality or customer focus
  • engagement programs for mixed teams
  • corporate events focusing on the brand, culture or internal values
  • programmes for teams working with customers, products or consumer experiences
  • creative workshops that can be followed by presentations, judging or socialising

Why does it deliver results?

Essence of Excellence works because it transforms abstract ideas – excellence, brand, quality, empathy, customer satisfaction – into a tangible, sensory experience.

Participants don’t just discuss the customer; they have to put themselves in the customer’s shoes: what they’re feeling, what they’re looking for, what appeals to them, and what message would strike a chord with them.

This format quickly brings to light differences in perception within the team. The same aroma can convey different things to different people, and teams need to listen, compare, negotiate and agree on a common approach.

This is precisely where the value lies: participants discover how important it is not just to create from their own perspective, but from the perspective of the person for whom they are building.

At the same time, the project has produced an elegant and memorable end result: a fragrance and a brand concept. It is an accessible experience, yet one that conveys a powerful message about communication, empathy, perception and excellence in customer relations.
