When it comes to the long-term health of a business, creativity is vital. Whether we're talking about departmental innovation or internal programs to help creativity take root.
In management the principles of LEGO are often used, from building to destroying or rebuilding. Looking back in the past, the Wright brothers used LEGO principles; also in multinationals, in recreational spaces they are used, for example Google has LEGO toys in their libraries and offices to challenge engineers.
Because the benefits of playing with LEGO were observed, AMA researchers conducted a study which found that “freestyle” activities with LEGO pieces develop more intense creative behavior than playing by rules.
Nonconformist... or not.
Experiments were carried out on different groups of students in which they were given a variety of LEGO pieces; some of them followed the instructions of the LEGO kit, while others approached freestyle building. After building the game, students were given SAT-type tests of creative thinking, elaboration or abstraction. You might think that using your imagination is the bottom line, but that's... not quite the case. Yes, it is an aspect to keep in mind, but so is the convergent thinking stimulated by the construction kit.
It's all about warm-up
Manoush Zomorodi, recommends that the whole creative process be treated as such - starting with warming up. Exercises like Pictionary, cordless phone or free association. Exercises like these will develop your divergent thinking.
“Some of the most significant ideas come about when someone sees a problem in a new way - often by combining disparate elements that initially seemed unrelated” (Dorie Clark, “Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build a Following Around It.”)")
